Chapter 108 - Day 26: Working.

The man worked more diligently than ever as he stared at the computer screens that were in front of him. His eyes were wide open and awake. His keystrokes - swift and passionate as he pounded his keyboard like he was making...

... the most progress that he had made in a month.

'Whatever he's doing... he's trying his hardest for sure.' I thought to myself as I couldn't help but admire his diligence and worth ethic.

As time passed sweat began to accumulate on his skin as he continued to grind out line after line. A pile of work left for a single man to complete. Although his back was hunched. Although, his hands looked sore from his typing. Although his work looked frustrating. Although life was unfair. He continued to plough through his work like a madman.

The man began to mumble as he tried to urge himself onwards.

"Dad's coming," He kept repeating himself. "Just a few more lines of code." he continued.

Time passed as he continued to mumble to himself - his frustration was evident as he slammed the table as if he hit a roadblock in his work.

But he continued.

Occasionally he stopped to take and breather and to rub his eyes or to stare at the clock on the wall. The clock seemed to haunt him as it reminded him that he had to be somewhere else.

Hours passed by as I became mesmerized by the man's movements. He was frustrated, but the confidence that his eyes exuded was astonishing.

And I knew why. I knew why he worked so hard. I knew the reason all too well.

Family.

Just like the man, my family was everything to me... but they didn't think so, huh?

...

The more I watched him, the more I sympathized with him. The more I watched him... the more that I felt like I knew him...

Wait... do I know him?

...

With each passing hour, the man's eyes drooped even more. With each passing hour, his back arched even more. But with each passing hour, his typing speed didn't decrease. It only increased.

"Yes," he muttered as he slammed a key down and he collapsed onto his desk. Raising his head up, he seemed to press a single button and a dinging sound soon followed.

As soon as he heard it, he jumped out of his seat and pulled out a cell phone from his pocket - his hands shaking as he did.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

The quiet beeping of a call being sent out filled the room.

"Hello?"

"Sir... I finished it."

"Great. Go have a good rest and... I'm sorry. You know I have to be tough on you. Go, I won't hold you up... Go see your daughter."

The man didn't even listen to the last part of his leader's speech as he was already sprinting down the hallway towards the exit already.

Slamming the door, he left in a mad dash.

...

I'm going to skip the details of how the man entered some sort of metallic creature which took him at incredible speeds through linear paved paths to another building. Am I sure you won't mind right?

...

Contrasting with the blue hue and the blue colour of the man, he arrived at a different coloured building. No longer was the world only blue and shades of blue. Now it as also white. A building of white.

Weee. Wooo. Weee. Wooo. The cries of another cube-shaped shaped metallic creature echoed nearby as it slowed down.

Tilting m head, I watched as more humans dressed in black pulled a bleeding body outwards from the depths of its guts on some sort of moving bed.

'What is this place?' I questioned as I watched the man exiting his metallic creature. Tapping some sort of card against a box, he sprinted into the building of the building and through its halls.

Beep. The sound of a beep entered the air as the man slammed on some sort of round button. It lit up as he did. Anxiously, he looked around and waited.

Before the metal jaws opened before him and some sort of lifting device took him upward and I was forced to follow him.

The white halls. The smell of ... disinfectant...? What's a disinfectant?

'I know this place... but how... when... I'm a snail... I was just born a few days ago on a tree... why do I feel like I know this place?'

Boom. Boom. Boom.

Bounding through the hallway, the man ran through the hallway until he reached the end. Until he reached a door and he just seemed to stop. Adjusting his clothing, he knocked gently on the door and walked in.

And there she laid - his daughter.

In a pale yellow which contrasted with the sad blue of that covered the world that I was in.

Lying under sheets of white, numerous wires and tubes were inserted into her by silver needles. It looked painful, but it was necessary. Her life was sustained as they continued to drip into her veins.

The light of a screen danced upon her face as her father entered the room. The presence of her father seemed to awaken her from her slumber as her eyes slowly opened.

"Sorry..." the man struggled to say through his panting - his mad dash had clearly taken its toll on his body.

His daughter only smiled back at him gently.

Sighing as the man's shoulder's began to relax he approached her bedside.

"Look," she said weakly as she pulled something from under her sheets. It too was connected by wires like she did, but they were attached to the tablet that was in front of her. "Look what I managed to program..." She paused as she started to breathe heavily for a moment before she began once more. "... program in today."

In her outstretched hands, she held out the doll out for her father to see. Squinting in the grey light, she tapped her screen and it moved and waved.

"I want to... be like you someday."
