Working as a foreign affairs analyst meant using their expertise and knowledge of a specific region to advise and assist the company in developing policy, setting goals and more.
She wasn't sure if she could do that type of work, considering that she's been in the background since her early twenties.
Her brows furrowed. Jiang Yue couldn't make a decision lightly.
Kang Shu eased her worries by saying, "You don't have to be so nervous. One of our analysts is resigning and they need someone to replace him as soon as possible. For the meantime, he'll be watching from the sidelines and coaching you on how to best do the job."
"Why is he resigning?"
"I'm not too sure of the details either." Kang Shu furrowed her brows. "But that's none of our business."
"Right."
After talking for a while, Kang Shu stood up.
"Well, I better get going soon." She picked up her bag as they began to walk to the elevator. "You can go grab lunch at the cafeteria if you'd like. I have to go home after delivering a bunch of paperwork."
"I can wait for you!"
Jiang Yue had nothing to do for the rest of the day. And staying at home seemed counterproductive at staying away from work.
But her senior shook her head. "I couldn't let you wait for me. Especially since I don't know how long I'll take. Go on, get lunch. I know you're hungry."
Cue her stomach grumbling, Jiang Yue blushed.
"Okay, thank you senior."
"You're welcome." Kang Shu winked. "I'll reach you as soon as I submit your application."
Jiang Yue nodded and they went into separate elevators.
Today could not be more confusing for her. Her initial desire to have a promotion went into a complete career change; and while she was confident that she could adjust, it didn't sit right with her.
Things couldn't have gone more smoothly. Too smoothly.
Somehow, she had a nagging feeling that something would happen. And she won't particularly like it.
"Whatever…" she muttered as she got off the elevator, shaking off the weird feeling she felt.
The cafeteria on the 3rd floor looked nice. Everything looked spacious and clean, typical of an office building, but somehow grander with the marble floors and chandeliers.
"Am I in a hotel or something?"
She had never felt more out of place. In a crowd of business suits, her outfit in an overcoat felt shabbier than she thought.
Nonetheless, she tried not to let it show.
But the constipated smile on her face said otherwise. Thankfully, she got her meal without much trouble and thanked the staff for being patient with her.
Sitting down next to the windows, Jiang Yue ate in silence, occasionally observing the place with squinted eyes.
The chandeliers looked like they had crystals in them, the walls that served as supporting beams were lined with mirrors, the plants looked expensive and luxurious, and there was even classical music playing in the background.
Whoever the owner of this building is, she understood that rich people really did live in a different universe than people like her.
A man stepped off the elevator with a frown on his face.
Tall with a charming appearance, his arrival garnered a few stares. The man paid them no heed and just wanted to eat his meal in silence.
Just then from the corner of his eyes, he noticed a familiar figure.
"Junior… Jiang…?"
From where he stood, he couldn't get a good look of the person's face, but somehow he had a feeling that it was her.
'It's been years,' he thought.
With a smile on his face, he ordered a meal and sat down opposite her.
"Hello."
Looking up, Jiang Yue looked surprised to see a handsome man in front of her.
"Ah yes, hello." she bowed her head.
"Hm?"
Something felt different.
Did she not recognize him? It has been a decade since then. But he couldn't help but feel a little saddened.
This junior of his… He's aware that she was forgetful, but not that forgetful.
"Can I help you?" Jiang Yue asked.
Usually, she wouldn't say anything and continue eating, but she really could not take the stares gazing at her. It made her squirm in her seat.
"No, well… you don't remember me?"
Feeling enlightened, Jiang Yue raised her brows. This question had always popped up with a few people. The onset of her amnesia caused her to lose memories of 6 years of her life.
She was thankful that besides the memories, nothing else had been lost.
"Senior, can I call you that?" He nodded. "I had amnesia during the last year of high school so I don't remember anyone from that time."
Except for a few friends who wanted to reconnect, Jiang Yue surmised that her time in high school wasn't as great as she thought. In contrast, the four years she had in college were memorable.
"I see…" The man rubbed his chin thoughtfully.
Such a thing happened that he wasn't made aware of it. Jiang Yue could be considered a popular figure even within Qing Middle and High School.
To have something happen to her and have no news… just what kind of family does she have?
"Can I ask for your name? I think I can remember a few things if you tell me."
Except for remembering small memories like school trips, she hadn't managed to recall any major events in her life.
"Su Wang. My name is Su Wang."
"Senior Su."
She tried to recall memories, anything that could help her remember, but when she tried it only made her head throb in pain.
"You shouldn't push yourself. It's not a big deal if you don't remember."
'I'd rather not be reminded of the fact that I used to have a crush on you,' Su Wang thought. It was embarrassing having to be reminded of that when they used to meet outside of school.
High Schooler Jiang Yue would tease him, while he could only helplessly smile. Remembering it made him chuckle a bit.
"Sure," she replied as she finished her meal. Then she stood up. "If you'll excuse me, Senior. I have to leave now. It was nice meeting you."
"Likewise."
Left alone, he had forgotten to ask for her contact. He didn't know if they'd meet again or not, which made him feel bitter.
Jiang Yue could be considered a valuable friend of his. She acted friendly without ulterior motives and gave great advice.
Her amnesia was a pity.
Back in her apartment, Jiang Yue passed the next few days uneventfully. A redundant routine of eat, sleep, and work.
Only after a week had gone by did she receive the email from her supervisor. She had passed the initial stage and had to go to the company again for the interview.
Jiang Yue jumped for joy. The interview would be set on Friday at 8am.
This time, she had to look more professional than the last. Although her attire looked nice, it could not be compared to the businesspeople who wore crisp suits and elegant dresses.
She had up her game and outclass the others.
