Chereads / The Pyromancer / Chapter 5 - The Awakening to a New World

Chapter 5 - The Awakening to a New World

Two wagons and one carriage with two horses pulling each one are moving along the dirt road under broad daylight. An unusual chirping of the bird resonate in the surrounding area, the slowly galloping of the horses, and the shaking of the wagon disturbed Aidan's deep slumber. Strides of accompanying people and calm chattering can be heard outside the cart, casually talking to one another like they've known each other for a long time. The sun is high but there's a cold chill in the air as if winter just ended and the soft smell of spring is coming.

Aidan's lying and resting on one of the wagons, but the fumbling of the wagon kept him from having a good rest. Slowly opening his eyes, Aidan's expecting to see his room while lying in his soft bed, but instead, the scenery that he saw isn't what he expected. Confused about what's happening, he recalled what happened last night and what he saw in his dream. He touched his stinging head, his headache he's having reminds him of a very bad hangover he once had but he can still remember that he didn't drink so much last night. When the pain subsided and he can think peacefully again, he looked at his surroundings and was disoriented by he saw. He's inside a wagon with boxes and goods are stacked inside, wearing a comfortable robe like clothing with leather armor outside. There are three people with him in the wagon, sitting and looking just as confused as him. Two are female, one looks like in her forty's and wearing an apron, the other looks like in her early twenty's wearing a poor dress and clinging to the other woman, looking terrified while staring at Aidan. The man looks a little older than the older woman and wears a fine clothing that's made to look like a uniform of a butler, he's staring at Aidan with burning eyes and prepared to fight. The scene made Aidan speechless, but after a few moments of recalling what happened in his dream, he started to have a hint on what's happening.

"Could it be that what happened in my dream is true? Did The Watcher transfer me into a different world? ugh.. this is very confusing, but first, I have to ask these strangers what's going on and I need to calm them down, they look terrified while looking at me, this feels very unpleasant..." Aidan thought while scratching his head.

"So you're awake. Forgive me if I'm on my guard and my family's afraid of you, but we don't know what you might do after you wake up, especially these days. Tell us your name."

"Hello, my name is Aidan Bluford, you can call me Aidan. Don't worry, I mean you no harm, I can't lift a sword even if I try to. Can you tell me what's happening? Where am I?"

The man spoke with caution, "The mercenaries found you sleeping by the road, you're unconscious so my master asked the mercenaries to bring you here. We're planning on dropping you on to the next village if you're still unconscious by the time we reach there. What are you doing in that place anyway?"

What the hell? I was sleeping on my bed last night and now they're telling me they found me by the road? Did The Watcher in my dreams last night really transport me in another world or some people are playing a prank on me? This is unbelievable, I need to know more about my current situation and make a believable explanation to them. They won't believe me even if I told them that I'm from another world.

"I-I'm a wanderer from a distant land, and I was traveling to discover new land and meet people. I must have drunk so much alcohol last night that I passed out."

It looks like they believed me, their shoulders relaxed and the threatening gaze from the man is slowly wearing off. They must be very wary of me and be thinking I might attack them when I wake up.

"Hmmm... That explains why you reek of alcohol and what you're doing on that side of the road, along with that strange outfit you're wearing. My master asked me to kill you where you are if you were to recklessly attack me and my family."

Do I look that dangerous? This outfit might have made me look dangerous, they probably thought I'm a mage or something. Wait a minute, didn't The Watcher told me he gave me his blessing? And he gifted me with a blue flame? Is that from the VRMMORPG game, Mythos? If that's the case, then am I a mage here?

A shocking look twisted Aidan's face as he contemplates about this reality. "Could I even go back to my original world? Or maybe... Should I even go back? Whatever, I have different priorities, for now, especially pieces of information about this world, I can look up about transferring to another world later."

The daughter of the man must have noticed Aidan's look as she asked Aidan-

"Are you alright? You look pale."

"Oh it's nothing, must have been the hangover from last night. Anyway, you haven't introduced yourselves yet, may I know your names?"

The man answered, still, with a bit of wariness towards Aiden.

"Maybe. My name is Gregor, and this is my wife Stephanie, and my daughter, Lucy. We're a family under service of the noble merchant Alcardo Leon Verillia, and the men outside are the mercenaries he hired as his personal guard. Alcardo is a generous man but sometimes a bit greedy, and he has a dark hobby."

"Careful not to let him catch you say that! He's a good man nonetheless, compared to some other noble. He's also the one that let you stay in this wagon, Aidan."

The wife spoke with a hint of worry for her family, looking around to make sure no one heard that.

He sounds dangerous, but I should try and befriend this noble, I could gain something from him if I'm successful. Nobles often are the well-educated people of the society in this era, I could gather more information from him.

"Umm... Can I see Mr.Alcardo Leon Verillia? I'd like to thank him personally for helping me earlier."

"As long as you don't do anything dangerous, it's fine. We'll wait till the next stop, where the mercenaries can rest for a bit. My daughter, Lucy, will accompany you and will explain to my master everything."

Lucy's suddenly starting sweating from her nervousness, she's the type of person that likes to keep to herself, that's why when she heard her father, she became uneasy.

"Whaaa-? Me?! Why me?"

"Haha! Relax, you can do it. It's time for you to grow up and get used to these things."

"Thank you very much!"

Aidan bowed his head to show his appreciation while Lucy's face is red and shows how uncomfortable and shy she is.
