After leaving Sunshine Children's Palace, Gao Han took Su Lin back to her parents' apartment. They had to collect the spare key from the landlady since little Su had forgotten the main key inside last time she left home. Going in, Su Lin felt a chill. It was as though this was a different place- not the home she knew so long.
Gao Han had no time to appreciate the sentiments. He gave a stack of pink post-it notes to Su Lin. "You put these stickies on the things you want to take to the orphanage. The rest of the stuff can wait till the end of the month when the rent expires. If your dad or mom isn't back by then, we will sell them and put the money in your account after we open one for you."
Little Su nodded and started posting the stickies. First the plush bear her mom gave on her fifth birthday, next the electronic tablet she had won as a chess prize, after that her set of sketch books, then the family album (`・ω・´) In the end, everything she marked fit into two big bags. In the meantime, Gao Han searched for documents that would serve as Su Lin's identification like her birth certificate. These might be needed when she verifies her age for youth chess tournaments, or applies for her national identity card or passport.
When they collected everything and got back to Gao Han's place, it was already eight in the evening. There was no time to get dinner ready, so Gao Han simply ordered a large spinach pizza, barbecue chicken wings and soft drinks for delivery. After they both had their meals and freshened up, he taught little Su how to use the chess app on the tablet. After signing up, one feature allowed users to solve chess puzzles, which was very useful for training the tactical mind. Another feature helped users learn different openings with over 3,000 opening lines. Since learning openings was a very time-consuming process, the app allowed players to self-learn at their own pace. The video option enabled users to watch games with commentary by experts. Finally, there was an option to play again others and even join online tournaments to apply in practice everything one had learnt. All in all, it was the best thing to train beginners. Of course, one might become confused with the size of the variety, but that's where Gao Han could give pointers. He told little Su to look up games featuring the Ruy Lopez exchange variation, and then went to bed. He knew the girl will stay up playing with the app. He really couldn't keep up with the energy of kids.
Su Lin energetically tried signing up for a 5-minute online blitz tournament. Once she was assigned an opponent, she tried out the opening line she was just taught. However, the opponent didn't play as expected and after 26 moves, Su Lin's time ran out, thus losing by flag down. As she contemplated the difficulties of blitz game, somewhere she didn't know, her system had a change.
The value next to "Mind Power" rose rapidly from 0/10 to 0.01>>0.02>> 0.03...until it stopped at 0.11 when Su Lin lost. If she could see her status screen, it would look like this:
