Chapter 11 - Awake

Gao Han stared at his phone in confusion. From what Inspector Wang said, it seemed that the girl's mother was "missing", and the father was abroad. Of course, the inspector had not revealed any details about the father's extramarital affair, or the mother's mysterious circumstances of her disappearance. That information was not for the public even if he was no longer handling the case. "What should I do about Little Su? What about her other relatives?" Gao Han asked bewildered.

"It seems the Lin couple wasn't in touch with their relatives. I did get the number of Weihan Lin's parental home. Why don't you try calling and ask if they can take her in? If it doesn't work, you can put the girl in an orphanage until her father comes to get her back," Inspector Wang suggested.

Gao Han called the number the inspector gave him. When an elderly male voice responded, he quickly explained the reason for his call. "Little Su is all alone now. Can you take her in until one of her parents come back?" he pleaded.

The person on the other end appeared enraged: "Why should we? We told him so many times not to marry that evil b*tch! He didn't listen and even cut off all ties with us. Now you want us to care of her evil spawn? Where in the world is there such a good thing? Not happening. You can put her to the streets for all we care."

This unreasonable attitude p*ssed Gao Han off. He clenched his jaws in anger: "Even if you have disputes with the parents, she is just a little kid. What sin does she have? I am almost a stranger to her, and sure I can put her to the streets. But can you take care of your reputation after that? Once people begin talking about how the 'good' in-laws left alone a five-year old child on the streets, can you handle it?"

The other party was silent for a while, and then responded curtly, "If you want to spread gossip, then do so. We aren't afraid of a few rumors. We aren't taking care of that baggage anyway. You can deal with it how you like. Oh, and remember never to call us again."

After the call ended, Gao Han was about to throw his phone in consternation. How could these people be so callous? But he looked up only to find a pair of clear brown eyes staring at him. Little Su had woken up at some point without his knowledge. Since the ventilator was still attached, she couldn't say anything, but just blinked at him with her large eyes. As Gao Han had been sitting by her bedside before he took the call from the inspector and then called the grandparent, she might have heard everything. Regardless of whether she understood or not, it was something he would have to tell her anyway. Children might be just children, but it is best to be truthful to them. Otherwise, if you tell a lie to explain things away, you would have to build a whole castle of lies to keep things up. But when they grow up and the castle comes down on its own, you would just be left with another disillusioned, vindictive hater. From the beginning, Gao Han had never intended to lie to Su Lin.
