Shiro had, indeed, progressed. He'd improved Cat's Paw, Tail Bash and Sonic Bolt enough to learn Cat's Claw, Tail Lash and Hypersonic Bolt. His Sharp Fang had reached level 3, and his Sonic Bolt actually reached level 7.

"Is that possible?!" Colin asked.

"For Sonic Bolt, yes. It can reach level 10." Satrox frowned. "But I think it's wasting time. He should have trained his Hypersonic Bolt, or his Cat's Claw. When my Lynxmice were able to use Cat's Claw, I trained them hard, so that they could use Double Claw."

"What does that do?" Colin asked

Satrox pointed. "It makes him use a Claw Technique twice at the same time. How strong it is depends on what Technique he wants to double."

"Double the damage." Colin whistled.

"Double the MP cost too, don't forget that." Satrox said. "But it's one of my favorite moves."

"Can Lynxmice even learn it?" Colin said doubtfully. "I mean… they can't go beyond level 10."

"Most can't." Satrox admitted. "But I've raised a few that could. That's the whole point of Breeding, after all – to make stronger Comrades."

"Including Wraith, there?" Colin nodded to Satrox's black Lynxmouse.

"Wraith doesn't use Double Claw." Satrox said. "He uses Quadruple Claw."

"What's that?" Colin frowned.

"Double means two times. Quadruple means four."

Colin whistled. "Satrox, are you taking part in the Tournament?"

Satrox shook his head. "Scarlet would recognize me if I did."

"Pity." Colin said. "You'd win it for sure."

"Maybe." Satrox said. "But I won't risk Scarlet seeing me."

Colin checked Shiro's abilities.

"His traits changed." Colin frowned and pointed. "This new trait, 'empathy'. Can you tell me what that means?"

" 'Empathy'?!" Satrox stared. "Colin, that's…!"

"What?" Colin asked.

Satrox drew a deep breath. "Empathy means Shiro feels what other creatures feel. Have you any idea how much of an advantage that gives him when he's dealing with strange Wilds and Comrades?"

"Not really." Colin admitted.

Satrox shook his head. "Michi really took a lot of effort with this one. Let me put it this way, Colin – the Comrades you give to Shiro to command would be more willing to follow his orders than normal Command types."

"That's… good." Colin said.

"That's too good." Satrox grunted. "Are you willing to try an experiment?"

"What kind of experiment?" Colin frowned.

"After Taming a Wild, try getting Shiro to command it… in battle."

"Get a Tame to fight?!" Colin stared. "Is that possible?!"

"Usually, no." Satrox said. "But Shiro just might be able to pull it off."

"And he's now 'Protective'."

"Well, he is an Empath." Satrox said. "And you mentioned how he saved Raiki. Is it any wonder that he's 'Protective'?

"Well… is it good?" Colin asked.

"He'll be more prone to defensive tactics, which would be safer for your Comrades, but it could make your battles longer." Satrox said. "I just hope he's smart enough to be aggressive when it's needed."

"He's usually aggressive." Colin said. "He's just getting more concerned about the others."

"Well, then, it should be good." Satrox said.

Colin checked Raiki.

Under her picture, her tag said 'Raiki, M-4 Experimental Stormcat Cub (2nd Stage)'.

He pressed the 'abilities' tab.

Raiki

Sorrowful

Protective

"Her traits changed too…" Colin stared. "She's become Protective, just like Shiro. And she's gone from being Listless to Sorrowful."

"Well… I'd say she's getting better." Satrox agreed. "Slowly, but better."

"She's about as old as Shiro, right?" Satrox frowned, inspecting Raiki. "She's five levels behind."

"That's because she's been too sad to fight." Colin said. "But she took part in the Training, just now, so I think she'll catch up sometime."

"Catch up…" Satrox mused. "I'm not sure she ever will, Colin, not if Shiro keeps growing at the rate he has been."

"Well, I don't really think it matters. The important thing is that she gets well."

"What about her techniques?" Satrox asked.

Colin checked.

Satrox shook his head. "She hasn't trained her electric attacks at all."

"Electric?" Colin blinked. "She almost always uses sonic attacks so far."

"That's not good." Satrox said. "What are you going to do if you fight a Jellyfish? That thing won't be bothered by sonic attacks, but electric strikes would zap it very well."

"Fine. I'll ask Raiki to use electric attacks more." Colin said. "But don't you think it's rather wasteful? I mean, just look at the MP cost and the base power. I'm not surprised she's been using Sonic attacks."

"The earlier forms of electric attacks, maybe." Satrox agreed. "But look at the second stage techniques, Static Shock and Spark. Static Shock is weak and costs a lot of MP but people like it for the 'shock' effect. Spark is actually better in terms of how much MP you use for how much damage you cause."

"But first, she'd need to master Zap to level 3." Colin sighed.

"Not very difficult." Satrox told him. "Just train her up a bit. It's not worth the effort when she was Stage 1, but now she's a Stage 2 cub. As long as she can learn better attacks, shouldn't she try it?"

"She should." Colin admitted. "I should have tried it earlier."

"That's the whole point of looking at their techniques in detail." Satrox said. "But it's fine. Sonic Barrage is a good technique to train."

"What's 4/s?" Colin pointed to the Sonic Barrage Base MP cost.

"4 MP per shot." Satrox said. "It costs the same as the normal Sonic Bolt, it's base power is slightly weaker, but it shoots them non-stop, so it causes damage far more quickly. Also, because she's been training on it, each bolt in the Sonic Barrage at level 4 actually does MORE damage than the normal Sonic Bolt at level 3. And remember, it costs the same amount of MP per shot."

"So… Raiki should just forget about Sonic Bolt and stick to Sonic Barrage." Colin figured.

"Exactly." Satrox agreed. "Go straight for Hypersonic Bolt. That's her strongest one-shot attack right now."

"So… Hypersonic Bolt, Sonic Barrage, Zap and Static." Colin frowned. "What about claws?"

"Her original Traits made her very good at long-range attacks." Satrox thought for a bit. "She'll probably get them back. Claw techniques can be useful from time to time, but her main attacks should still be Sonic and Electric."

"Isn't that wasting her speed and Feline Finesse?" Colin asked.

"Her speed is good for dodging." Satrox said. "That's another thing that makes her good at long-range shoot-outs. That finesse adds to her accuracy, so she hits long-range targets better too."

"Raiki's still my best long-range fighter." Colin sighed.
