Oliver was an underpaid, overworked civil servant, grinding away every day to earn money for his twin brother, who had been suffering from heart disease for over six years. But he dies one night from caffeine overdose during work. 

Oliver awakens in an unfamiliar world, reborn as Alex, the newborn son of scientists in a world divided by light and darkness. In this world, humanity is locked in a desperate, losing battle against the darkness, which spawns creatures known as the Dark Dwellers and corrupts humans, turning them into tainted beings called the Corrupted.

Humanity’s only defense lies with the Marines and the Saints. But both sides are divided by deep-seated conflict: the Saints are humans whose inner light has grown strong enough to combat the darkness, while the Marines are warriors who have been merged with darkness to wield its power.

Alex discovers that before he was even born, he was infused with a dangerous amount of darkness. Now, Alex possesses a unique ability—he can overclock his darkness without fully succumbing to it, giving him a power no one else has.
