Charlie was born to a poor family. It was a common thing in his village to be poor, and certainly not something to be ashamed of. But Charlie wasn't the only child. He had been born as the 7th and last child. It wasn't bad being poor, but his parents were poor and stupid.
At least they were until Charlie's 7th birthday. Like all children that turn 7, Charlie was taken to the town that collected taxes from their village and several other villages near them. And like all those children that were taken to this large town, Charlie was test for his compatibility with the energy known as qi.
Charlie, however, was different from most of the children that were tested. Charlie was talented. Being talented was good, and being poor was fine, but being talented and poor was only a disaster waiting to happen. To prove this point Charlie was sold. His parents requested 1,000 Gold, but were given 2,000.
From that point, Charlie didn't belong to himself. 
And then, Charlie was taken in by the Devil Sect.
