Zero has lived for thousands of years as the only 'successful' experiment of the gods in their attempt to make a perfect vessel. A human vessel that doesn't need to do things such as eat or sleep. A human that can not die by normal means. A vessel that could single-handedly end a war if it wished to. Though they succeeded in making a perfect immortal being, Zero's mind deteriorated in the process, making him lose his purity, and therefore unusable as a vessel. The gods tried continuously to find or create another perfect human to be a vessel of the gods but failed each and every time. 

After being abused repeatedly for the sake of the greater good for thousands of years, Zero's mind finally shatters. After being betrayed he finds himself back at the start of everything.
