This alternative history novel explores what might have happened if the Southern Ming regime had not collapsed immediately after the Qing conquest, but instead escaped overseas to continue their resistance. In the late 1660s, facing the invasion of Qing troops, the Yongli Emperor decides to flee south with his son the Crown Prince Zhu Cixuan and their court. After overcoming many difficulties, they eventually reach Europe and obtain asylum from Western countries. In England, Crown Prince Zhu receives a warm welcome from Charles II, kindling his dream to one day return to China and restore the Ming Dynasty. By fictionalizing this history, the novel examines the possibility of a prolonged Southern Ming resistance overseas, and the cultural exchanges between East and West that might have resulted.
