Hirata Keiko is an only child to a single parent, her father. They are extremely poor which forces her father to resort to stealing as well as doing shady jobs in order to survive. Contrary to the way her father Kagawa Shichiro, acts towards her, he is an infamous: thief, kidnapper, harasser, an all round scoundrel that would resort to any methods for the right price.

Keiko is still a young child, unaware of the lengths her father goes to in order to protect her. One day she finds a mouth gaping scene in their bedroom. 

She resolves herself to stay away from her father, vowing to never make contact with him again, to live independently. However without her knowing, Kagawa Shichiro has been with her the entire time.
