It's been 5 years since the aliens came & more than half the world's populous has been wiped out. Now they just isolate us and let us live our lives more or less like we used to. Now except for the thin tethers they constructed starting just past the [ Jersey border] that extend from the ground up, past the clouds and the frequent tremors, Life is becoming bearable again. 
That's what I thought until people started going missing.

People die there, most of the time, they don't come back and the ones who do, come back missing memories of their entire disappearance. 

This wasn't my problem, I refused to believe it had anything to do with me.
